Two rivers and a phosphate boom
Dunnellon was founded in 1887, two years before phosphate was discovered nearby in 1889. The mining boom that followed, the first of its kind in Florida, lasted into the early 1910s and centered on the Rainbow River, then called Blue Run. The city was platted in 1890 and incorporated in 1891. The Rainbow River joins the Withlacoochee inside city limits, and the Withlacoochee forms the border with Citrus County. Unincorporated Rainbow Springs lies to the north.
Rules
Dunnellon sets its own rules; ask the city before taking a tree down. Land just outside city limits falls under Marion County, where trees on single-family parcels and trees under 10 inches DBH are among the exemptions. See permits.
Other towns on this site: Belleview, Silver Springs Shores, Summerfield, and Ocala itself. See the full list.
